Kit Hill Launch 1106e

Kit Hill Country Park has been designated a Local Nature Reserve.

Famous for its fine views and fascinating history dominated by a rugged granite hilltop, the four hundred acre wild open space adds this accolade to its recently announced Green Flag Award and Green Heritage Award.

The Local Nature Reserve designation offers protection to a range of species and habitats on the hill in addition to securing the provision of educational and recreational opportunities for the surrounding local communities.

To celebrate the designation Cormac Solutions Ltd, Cornwall Council and the Tamar AONB through the Helping Hands for Heritage project joined together to offer a day of historic and nature related activities on 31 July.

Owned by Cornwall Council and managed by Cormac Solutions Ltd, Kit Hill was designated a Local Nature Reserve in June 2014 under Section 21 of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.

Edwina Hannaford, Cornwall Council cabinet member for Environment, Heritage and Planning, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the designation of Kit Hill as a Local Nature Reserve; it’s the culmination of years of work on the hill and will bring added protection to a unique landmark”.

Cornwall Councillor for Callington Andrew Long said: “It is great news to hear about the Local Nature Reserve designation. Kit Hill has a long history with Callington and the surrounding parishes and it is good to see that we are going to protect its natural heritage for the coming generations.”

If you’d like to visit Kit Hill and learn more about the heritage of the area, there is another event on Sunday 24 August. This will include a guided walk with the Ranger, and local experts looking at some of the main archaeological features and management. We will also be looking at areas where volunteers have already helped manage the hill, and at projects planned for the next year which volunteers can help with. Meet in the Adit car park at 10am, have lunch at the summit at 12.30pm and either do just half of the walk or continue walking until around 3pm.
