This summer, seven Cornwall Council beaches will be flying Blue Flags with Cornwall receiving the largest number of Blue Flag and Seaside Awards in the country.

Prestigious Blue Flags, the international standard for the best beaches in the world, will be flying this season at Cornwall Council’s Gyllyngvase in Falmouth; Porthminster and Porthmeor in St Ives; Polzeath; Porthtowan; Trevone and Widemouth, near Bude. All seven have also been successful in their bid for a Seaside Award.

In addition, Porth near Newquay has been successful in its bid for a Seaside Award and joins Crooklets and Summerleaze in Bude in gaining Keep Britain Tidy‘s own award for the beaches that meet the very highest standards for cleanliness and facilities.

All the award applications have been funded by Sharp’s Brewery Limited with Cornwall Council co-ordinating the application process, and the work required to make sure that the beaches reach the exacting standards required to win made possible through the efforts of community groups, beach champions and local businesses.

Sharp’s Brewery, based in Rock, Cornwall has played a key role in sponsoring the Blue Flag initiative and Seaside Awards. This year 5p from every pint of Sharp’s limited edition beers: Rising Tide, Sea Mist, Point Break, Perfect storm and Doom Bar Reserve, will be contributed to the prestigious Blue Flag initiative.

James Nicholls, Senior Brand Manager, Sharp’s Brewery, says, “With Sharp’s Brewery being based in Rock, North Cornwall, the coastline and our beaches are deeply important to us. We are delighted to have raised over £15,000 in 2015 through sales of our exceptional, limited release beers. In 2016 we are extremely proud to be supporting the coastal community again, helping these beautiful beaches obtain and retain the prestigious Blue Flag status that they so highly deserve. The Blue Flag Initiative does a fantastic job of supporting beaches and communities in coastal areas, and we are pleased to be supporting the charity again within our heartland of Cornwall.”

Cornwall Council cabinet member for Housing and Environment Joyce Duffin said: “It is fantastic to see what can be achieved when sponsors, local beach champions and the Council work together to achieve these really excellent results for Cornwall. It’s great to see how everyone has stepped up to support their beaches. It is not just the cost of the application itself which needs to be factored in but all the work that needs to be carried out for a beach to be worthy of a Blue Flag or Seaside Award. The sponsorship and practical efforts of all concerned which has helped Cornwall Council to make the applications, is to be applauded.”

Malcolm Bell, Chief Executive, Visit Cornwall said: “This is great news for local residents and our visitors – it show the quality of these beaches and gives people the reassurance on the excellence of the beaches and bathing waters. A huge thanks for all those involved and to Sharp’s Brewery for supporting the awards”

John Fitter, Cornwall Councillor for St Mawgan and Colan, said: “I would like to congratulate Council officers and the community of Newquay Porth in being successful in submitting the application to get Newquay Porth awarded a Seaside Award. This is an excellent result and a just reward for all the hard work that went into the bid.”

Joanna Arvor, Chairman of the Polzeath Marine Conservation Group (PMCG) said ” We are thrilled about this announcement – these awards are important to the community and represent the tremendous amount of work that many do to keep our beach clean, plus they demonstrate how special our marine and coastal area in Polzeath is and how it is worth protecting! It is wonderful to all be working together with a common goal – a love of Polzeath”

John Barrow, Chairman Porthtowan Beach Association said: “I am absolutely delighted. Porthtowan has such a fantastic beach and its great to see it win national and international recognition. It’s brilliant that the whole community, with support from sponsors and in partnership with Cornwall Council, has worked together to win this award. Winning the Blue Flag Award as well as the Seaside Award is a brilliant achievement and a ringing endorsement of the exemplar standard of the beach environment at Porthtowan. It demonstrates that an inclusive partnership between Communities, Cornwall Council and our valuable sponsors not only works but also creates real value for everyone”

Tony Mason, St Ives Tourism Association said: “As our beaches are St Ives’ prime asset we are delighted that they have again been awarded Blue Flag status in recognition of the superb sand and sea quality and excellence of their ancillary facilities. Congratulations to all involved, but especially the beach maintenance teams.”
